International Interdisciplinary Conference "Estonia-Swedes. A Diaspora with Roots" 18.-20.03.2026
Venue: Estonian National Museum

Estonia - Swedes are one of the indigenous minorities in Estonia. They are also known as coastal Swedes or, depending on their region of residence, Ruhnu- Swedes, Hiiumaa-Swedes, etc. Swedes have lived on the Estonian coast and islands for centuries, preserving their cultural identity and dialects. At the same time, they have participated in cultural exchanges with other ethnic groups in Estonia, as well as with Swedes in Sweden and Finland.

This conference is inspired by the exhibition "Rannarootslased. Estlandssvenskar. Estonia-Swedes. A diaspora with roots". The aim is to give researchers from different disciplines the opportunity to present their research on the origins, mobility, heritage and cultural contacts of the Estonia-Swedes. The conference also aims to develop discussions between researchers from different countries and to involve local communities.
The conference will be held in Estonian and Swedish, with simultaneous interpretation. Participation is free of charge; however, participants will cover the cost of their own lunch.
